The winning project of this year’s Excellence in Partnering Award is U.S. GODAE:  Global Ocean Predication with the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM).

The Excellence in Partnering Award is given to a National Oceanographic Partnership Program Project that has exemplified the NOPP goals of partnering across industry, academia and government to promote the national goals of assuring national security, advancing economic development, protecting quality of life, and strengthening science education and communication through improved knowledge of the ocean.

The multi-institutional HYCOM consortium includes 24 academic, governmental, and commercial entities with long histories of supporting and implementing a wide range of oceanographic and ocean predication-related research. The objectives of GODAE include three-dimensional (3D) depiction of the ocean state at fine resolution in real-time, provision of boundary conditions for coastal and regional models, and provision of oceanographic boundary conditions for a global coupled ocean-atmosphere prediction model. These prediction systems are currently being used by the U.S. Navy and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
