New Publication from NOPP-Funded Research

The NOPP Office would like to congratulate Masaru Kunii, Takemasa Miyoshi, and Eugenia Kalnay on their recent publication in Monthly Weather Review titled “Estimating the Impact of Real Observations in Regional Numerical Weather Prediction Using an Ensemble Kalman Filter.”  This publication was the result of a three year NOPP-funded project on Improving Tropical Cyclone Intensity Forecasting.

This study is a breakthrough in estimating the impact of reconnaissance flight observations on forecasting Tropical Cyclones.  Click here for more information on the publication.

This research was also recently presented at the annual meeting of the Principal Investigators funded through the NOPP topic at the University of Miami in early March.  The presentation given at the meeting and a project summary can be found here.

Additionally, Drs. Miyoshi and Kunii recently published an article in the Journal of Pure and Applied Geophysics titled “The Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter with the Weather Research and Forecasting Model: Experiments with Real Observations”, which was also a result of their NOPP-funded project.  More information can be found here.

Congratulations again to Drs. Kunii, Miyoshi, and Kalnay on their successful project and publication!
